Book Week – Curious Creatures and Wild Minds

students dressed up as characters in a book

The 2020 CBCA Book Week was celebrated on October 23rd. Many of the Rivendell staff and students participated with great enthusiasm. Our SRC donated $5 for every person dressed up as a book week character to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. All the costumes were so impressive. A special mention goes to Cinderella, the Mad Hatter, Jack Sparrow, the Little Prince, Dr Who and Shinji Ikara.

For our assembly, students focused on this year’s Book Week theme – Curious Creatures and Wild Minds. Our presentation included interesting facts about the many curious creatures in Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland and Lord of the Rings.  We also researched and presented on the wild and wacky minds of famous authors Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton and Dr Seuss.

Fun Fact: Enid Blyton’s imaginative books have been translated into over 90 languages.

After assembly, students were given the fun task of creating an origami corner bookmark. They had the option to create a monster, animal or emoji bookmark. The bookmarks will come in quite handy during our daily Just Read program.

As an exciting finish to the book week celebration, on a beautiful sunny day, ice-creams were given out for a gold coin donation. All proceeds from our book week celebration went towards the Indigenous Literacy Foundation which helps to provide books and literacy programs to Australian remote communities.
